Itinerary-Pashupatinath TempleTour
Start your day with an early morning visit to the Pashupatinath Temple. The temple is most serene during the early hours, and this is also when you can observe the morning rituals and prayers.
Begin by exploring the main temple complex, which is restricted to Hindus for entry, but non-Hindus can view the temple from the opposite bank of the Bagmati River. The temple’s pagoda-style architecture, with its gilded roof and silver doors, is a marvel to behold. Visit the smaller temples and shrines within the complex, dedicated to various deities.
Walk along the banks of the Bagmati River, where you will witness the traditional cremation ghats. This is a place of deep spiritual significance, where families perform the final rites for their loved ones, in the belief that it will help them attain moksha (liberation).
Encounter the holy men, or sadhus, who are an integral part of the temple environment. Their unique appearances and spiritual practices offer a fascinating insight into Hindu asceticism. Some may also be willing to share their spiritual insights or pose for photographs.
If visiting in the evening, make sure to attend the evening Aarati (ritual of light) along the Bagmati River. This is a mesmerizing experience, with chants, music, and the lighting of oil lamps creating a magical atmosphere.
Engage with the local devotees and participate in or observe the various rituals that take place throughout the day. This offers a deep dive into the living traditions of Hinduism as practiced in Nepal.
Enjoy a traditional Nepali meal at a local restaurant nearby, where you can taste some of the region’s authentic flavors.
After a spiritually enriching morning, you can choose to visit other nearby attractions in Kathmandu or spend more time exploring the Pashupatinath area.
