Lukla Flight Guide | Essential Info for Everest Trekkers

Everything You Need to Know About Flights to and from Lukla

The gateway to Everest trekking adventures begins with a short but unforgettable flight to Tenzing-Hillary Airport in Lukla (2,860m) — often called one of the most thrilling airstrips in the world. If you’re planning to trek to Everest Base Camp (EBC), Gokyo, or Island Peak, understanding how Lukla flights work is essential for a smooth start.

 1. Where Do Lukla Flights Depart From?

Ramechhap Airport (Manthali) – Most Common

  • During peak trekking seasons (spring: March–May, autumn: Sept–Nov), flights are rerouted from Kathmandu to Ramechhap (Manthali Airport) due to air traffic congestion at Tribhuvan International Airport.
  • Drive from Kathmandu to Ramechhap: 4 to 5.5 hours (usually a very early morning or overnight trip)
  • Flight time Ramechhap → Lukla: Approx. 20 minutes

Kathmandu to Lukla – Off-Peak Only

  • Flights operate directly from Kathmandu to Lukla mainly in winter (Dec–Feb) and monsoon (June–Aug) if weather permits and air traffic is low.
  • Flight time Kathmandu → Lukla: Approx. 30–35 minutes

2. Weather & Delays – What to Expect

Lukla is in the Himalayan weather zone, which means:

  • Flights often depend on clear skies and visibility
  • Delays or cancellations are common due to fog, wind, or rain
  • Morning flights are prioritized due to calmer weather

Tip: Plan a buffer day in Kathmandu or Lukla before your international departure.

3. Baggage Limits & Rules

  • Weight limit: 10 kg (checked) + 5 kg (hand carry) = 15 kg total
  • Overweight charges: Apply per extra kilo
  • Soft duffel bags preferred over hard suitcases

Pro tip: Keep your jacket, camera, and essentials in your hand carry for easy access.

4. Booking Flights – Do It Through a Trekking Agency

While it’s possible to book Lukla flights independently, we strongly recommend using a reliable trekking agency like Everest Himalaya Treks to:

  • Reserve the best flight slots
  • Handle date changes during delays
  • Manage transport between Kathmandu and Ramechhap
  • Rebook or shift treks in case of cancellation

Our agency provides full assistance with Lukla flights, vehicle transfers, and all logistical support.

5. Kathmandu to Ramechhap Transfer Info

If your flight departs from Ramechhap:

  • Private Jeep or shared vehicle leaves Kathmandu around 1–2 AM
  • Arrive at Ramechhap airport by 5–6 AM
  • Flight typically departs 6–9 AM depending on conditions

We arrange comfortable vehicles for our trekkers, including pick-up service from your hotel.

Final Tips for Trekkers

  • Be mentally prepared for delays or weather interruptions
  • Carry snacks and water while waiting at small airports
  • Download offline entertainment – Ramechhap airport has limited facilities
  • Always travel with a flexible mindset in the Himalayas!
