Budhanilkantha Temple Tour

Budhanilkantha Temple, also known as the “Sleeping Vishnu,” is a sacred Hindu shrine located at the base of the Shivapuri Hill, about 10 kilometers north of Kathmandu. This temple is one of the most significant pilgrimage sites for devotees of Lord Vishnu and is especially revered for its unique and awe-inspiring statue of the deity. The temple’s name, Budhanilkantha, translates to “Old Blue Throat,” which refers to the blue-colored throat of Lord Vishnu, a feature associated with the deity’s act of drinking poison to save the world in Hindu mythology.

The centerpiece of the temple is a massive, 5-meter-long stone statue of Lord Vishnu reclining on a bed of coiled serpents, known as Shesha. The statue is carved from a single block of black basalt and rests in the middle of a small pond, symbolizing the cosmic ocean. This depiction of Vishnu in a resting pose is rare and is considered one of the finest examples of stone carving from the Licchavi period, dating back to the 7th or 8th century. The statue is believed to have been discovered in its current location and has remained a powerful symbol of devotion for centuries.
