Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek

The trek typically takes 18 to 22 days, including travel from Kathmandu, acclimatization days, and the return journey. The actual trekking duration is around 14–18 days, depending on the chosen route and pace.

The highest point is Pangpema (5,143 meters / 16,873 feet), which is the North Kanchenjunga Base Camp, offering stunning views of the north face of Mt. Kanchenjunga (8,586m – the world’s third-highest peak).

The trek starts and ends in Taplejung, which is accessed via Bhadrapur (by flight or road) and then by jeep drive to Taplejung.

You’ll need:

• Restricted Area Permit (RAP) for Kanchenjunga
• Kanchenjunga Conservation Area Permit (KCAP)
• TIMS Card (Trekkers’ Information Management System)

These permits must be arranged through a registered trekking agency, and a licensed guide is mandatory.

Yes. The Kanchenjunga region is classified as a restricted area, so you must trek with a registered guide and at least two trekkers (solo trekkers need a custom permit setup through an agency).

This is a strenuous and remote trek, suitable for experienced trekkers. You should be in excellent physical condition and comfortable with long walking days and basic accommodations.

• In Kathmandu: Tourist-standard hotels
• On the trek: Basic tea houses and homestays – rooms are simple, often with shared toilets, and limited heating. In very remote areas, accommodation may be extremely basic.

Meals include Nepali, Tibetan, and basic Western dishes (dal bhat, noodles, soup, potatoes, pasta, etc.). Choices are limited at higher altitudes. Vegetarian meals are available.

Yes. Typically, 1 porter is assigned for every 2 trekkers, carrying a maximum of 20–22 kg. You carry a daypack with essentials.

The best seasons are:

• Spring (March to May) – Clear skies and blooming rhododendrons
• Autumn (September to November) – Stable weather and excellent mountain views

Winter is extremely cold, and the monsoon season (June–August) is not recommended due to rain and landslides.

Mobile network is limited or unavailable in most of the upper trekking regions. Some villages may have NCELL or NTC coverage, and occasional Wi-Fi is available (for a fee), but unreliable.

Yes. As the trek reaches over 5,000 meters, altitude sickness is a real risk. The itinerary includes proper acclimatization days, and trekkers should be aware of symptoms and proceed slowly.

You’ll need:

• Warm clothing (layers, down jacket, thermal wear)
• Sleeping bag (–15°C or lower rating)
• Trekking boots, poles, headlamp, water purification tablets
• Personal hygiene and basic first aid kit
